WAYLAND - WACO High School wants to be extra careful when it comes to playing athletics during the Coronavirus pandemic, so they'll take extra precautions in their season-opening home tournament tonight. One of those precautions is to play the game without fans.
Athletic Director Chad Edeker says the extra step is to ensure there are not too many people in the building, with eight full volleyball teams, officials and media already accounting for a large group.
The tournament also will be a double elimination tournament, using just two courts. Previously, the tournament had two pools split up and played full pool play rounds, followed by the finals. The tournament previously has had three nets going at once, but the 2020 version will have just two nets being played at the same time, both in different gyms.
The Warriors will host Centerville, Columbus, Pekin, Sigourney, Van Buren County, West Burlington and Wapello. Van Buren is the defending champion, beating WACO in the finals last season.
