NEW SHARON ? The WACO football team upped its record to 2-0 with a win over North Mahaska, 40-14, and the Warriors will take their momentum into district play, which begins on Friday.
WACO had the momentum from the start when the traveled to New Sharon, scoring first on quarterback Ben Fear?s 58-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Ayers midway through the opening quarter. Tucker Janecek carried the ball into the end zone for the two-point conversion, and the Warriors led, 8-0.
They stretched that lead to 14-0 with a 10-yard run from Ayers, who was on his way to a team-high 103 rushing yards on the night.
In the second quarter, WACO led by as much as 28-0 after another run by Ayers, this time for 13 yards, and a 35-yard interception return by Dylon Carlson ? one of three WACO interceptions in the game.
North Mahaska got on the board with just a few seconds left in the quarter, and the Warriors went into the second half with a 28-8 edge.
In the third quarter it was Janecek?s turn for a touchdown, rushing for 30 yards and six points.
Isaac Black?s three-yard run just over a minute later scored WACO?s last touchdown of the game, and Ben Fear?s run for the two-point conversion gave the Warriors their final score.
The Warhawks managed one touchdown in the fourth quarter but fell short of the comeback they needed.
Ayers finished with not only a team-high in rushing yards, but also topped the Warriors with 78 receiving yards on the night.
Fear was six-for-nine in passing for 102 yards.
Cey Saeugling had 70 rushing yards in six carries against the Warhawks for a team-high average of 11.7 yards per carry.
On defense, WACO was led by Skyler Miller with six tackles. Saeugling, Black and Klinton Garrett each had five.
Black and Ayers joined Carlson with one interception each; Black returned his for 35 yards.
WACO opens district play against Lone Tree on Friday at 7 p.m. in Wayland.
