WAYLAND — The No. 10 (8-Player) WACO football team will once again be flying high into the playoffs. The Warriors finished out regular season play with an absolute drubbing of English Valleys on Friday night, winning 51-6.
The Warrior defense thrashed the Bears in the first half, collecting two early safeties and shutting English Valleys completely out in the first two quarters.
WACO led 30-0 after one quarter and 44-0 at halftime. Both teams would score once in the fourth quarter.
WACO’s offense didn’t need that many yards because of how well the defense played. The Warriors passed for 129 yards and rushed for 111 in the win.
Clayton Miller threw for 97 yards and three scores. Reece Oswald threw one pass for 32-yard touchdown.
Gage Samo paced the offensive playmakers with two catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. Hunter Hughes caught the 32-yard strike from Oswald, and Colton Leichty caught two balls for 21 yards and two scores.
WACO scored three times on the ground. Lerik McCarty, John McClaughlin and Louden Huisenga all found the end zone.
Huisenga had seven tackles to lead the defensive effort. He also picked one pass off. Leichty had the team’s lone fumble recovery.
WACO is now 6-1 on the season. The Warriors won’t have a game next week because they played in Week 0, but WACO is locked in to the second place spot in Class 8-Player District 6, so the Warriors will await their first round playoff opponent after next Friday’s games are all complete.
