The Cardinal and WACO volleyball teams each finished second in their respective pools on Thursday night, but the two Union area squads took two different roads to Saturday's big dance.
The Comets were joined by fellow Union area team Winfield-Mt. Union, top-seeded Central Lee and hosting Lone Tree in their four-team pool. Cardinal had to win a playoff against W-MU to punch their ticket.
The Comets went 2-1 in pool play. They defeated W-MU in three sets, taking it 21-23, 22-20, 15-8. Cardinal swept Lone Tree, but fell 21-13 and 21-16 to Central Lee.
After handling Lone Tree 21-10, the Wolves pulled the upset of the night, beating Central Lee 10-21, 21-13, 15-6 to set up a three-way tiebreaker between W-MU, Cardinal and Central Lee.
Central Lee had the top overall points score, meaning they were through. Cardinal defeated W-MU 21-15 in a one-set playoff to knock the Wolves out, and then fell 21-9 against Central Lee in the pool championship set.
WACO went 3-1 in their five-team pool. They beat West Burlington, Danville and Highland, but fell 21-13, 21-11 against pool champion Mediapolis.
Cardinal and WACO will join Central Lee, Mediapolis, Holy Trinity, New London, Van Buren and Notre Dame in the eight-team SEISC championship on Saturday, Sept. 26.
