CARROLL — The Van Buren County baseball team is off to the state tournament since the first time since 2016, and the Warriors will get an afternoon showdown on Tuesday.
Van Buren County (26-3) earned the No. 5 seed in the Class 2A tournament. The Warriors will take on fourth seeded West Lion (24-2) at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Warriors and Wildcats are the two winningest teams in the Class 2A field. West Lyon has the best winning percentage of the eight teams, and Van Buren County is second.
The game will be played at Merchants Park in Carroll, which is on its third year of hosting the Class 1A and Class 2A tournaments. Merchants Park saw another Southeast Iowa Super Conference team in New London win the Class 1A state title last year, and another SEISC South squad in Notre Dame will be playing 24 hours before Van Buren County, in the Class 1A field.
The winner of the Van Buren County-West Lyon game will play the winner of Tuesday’s morning game. At 11 a.m., top seeded Beckman Catholic (22-9) will take on Pella Christian, the same team which knocked out No. 1 Van Meter in the Substate final.
On the other side of the bracket, second-seeded Underwood (23-3) plays No. 7 seed Williamsburg at 7 p.m. Before that, No. 3 seed Cascade (24-8) takes on six-seeded Woodward-Granger (20-5) at 4:30 p.m.
The semifinals will take place on July 20. The Underwood vs. Williamsburg winner will play the Cascade vs. Woodward-Granger winner first, at 4:30 p.m., followed by the Beckman Catholic vs. Pella Christian winner playing the Van Buren County-West Lyon winner at 7 p.m.
If the Warriors can make the final, they will be playing at 2:30 p.m., on July 21, when the Class 2A state championship game begins.
The Class 2A field saw a lot of ranked teams bounced in the Substate final, including No. 2 Mid-Prairie, which lost to Van Buren 6-4.
The only ranked teams going in to the Class 2A tournament are No. 3 Beckman Catholic, No. 5 Underwood and No. 7 Cascade.
There are only two returning teams from last year’s Class 2A state tournament. Cascade came in as the No. 3 seed last summer before getting knocked out by Mid-Prairie. Beckman Catholic made the semifinals as the No. 4 seed before losing to eventual state champion Van Meter.
