WAYLAND - It wasn't the easiest of matchups for the WACO football team in their homecoming game on Friday night. The Warriors welcomed in No. 5 Montezuma, and after trading punches early, eventually faltered to the unbeaten Braves, 55-20.
WACO struck first, scoring on a 34-yard pass from Will Edeker to Zach Schmitz to take a 6-0 lead. Montezuma, however, put up two scores in the first period and hit one of two extra points to take a 13-6 lead into the second quarter.
WACO drove down and cut the Braves' lead to one point when Edeker scrambled into the end zone from 5-yards out. The 2-point conversion attempt failed and Montezuma led 13-12.
The Braves broke it open later in the second quarter. Montezuma answered WACO's score with 29-straight points, scoring four touchdowns and a safety to take a 42-12 lead into halftime.
Montezuma's Trey Shearer took the second-half kickoff to the end zone for a return touchdown and then caught a pass in the end zone to stretch the Braves' lead to 55-12.
The Warriors finally scored again in the fourth quarter. Drew Diers scored a 6-yard rushing touchdown, and Isaac Oswald found Cody Graber for the 2-point conversion.
Edeker went 4-for-12 for 62 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the loss. Schmitz' 34-yard touchdown reception was his only catch of the day, but he would lead the team in receiving.
Jonah Clark ran for 47 yards to lead the Warriors. Edeker went for 38 yards and a touchdown, and Simeon Reichenbach ran for 33.
The Warriors are now 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the district. They will travel to Winfield-Mt. Union (3-3, 2-3 for their final game of the year this week.
