LONE TREE - Lone Tree's homecoming was spoiled early by the WACO football team on Friday night. The Warriors scored the first four touchdowns of the game and won comfortably, despite a late run by the Lions. At the final buzzer, the scoreboard showed WACO 49, Lone Tree 38.
Colton Horak played the role of fun-spoiler in the first quarter. Horak ran in a nine-yard touchdown and a five-yard touchdown for the first two scores of the game. He capped off the second touchdown drive with a two-point conversion run and it was 14-0 WACO after one period.
Horak got in on the passing game in the second quarter, finding Drew Kissell for a 26-yard strike. Quarterback Nik Coble gave Kissell his second touchdown reception with a three-yard pass later in the quarter, and the extra point on the ladder score made it 27-0.
Lone Tree did score on a two-yard touchdown run and added a field goal just before halftime, but the Warriors led by 16 at the break, 27-11.
Horak scored again on a 27-yard run to start the scoring in the third quarter, and Matthew Leichty added a two-point conversion to stretch the lead to 35-11. Lone Tree cut the lead to 35-17 with a rushing touchdown of their own, but an Elijan McGohan 10-yard touchdown reception and a 32-yard touchdown run by Coble helped the Warriors put the game away, at 49-17.
Lone Tree was able to save face a bit in the fourth quarter, scoring three different times, including an 80-yard interception return for a touchdown, but the damage had already been done.
Horak ended the day with 20 rush attempts for 155 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 42 yards receiving, as well as a touchdown pass on his only passing attempt.
Coble went 15-22 for 110 yards and two touchdowns,a nd also added 67 yards and a score on the ground. Cobles favorite receiver on the day was Kissell, who caught five passes for two touchdowns. McGohan ended the night with three catches for 29 yards and a score.
Jaden Williams had nine tackles to lead the Warrior defense. Horak finished with 8.5 tackles and an interception. Nolan Eubanks had the only other takeaway, a fumble recovery.
The Warriors are now 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the district. They've got a huge test next week as they travel to Victor to play H-L-V on Friday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m.
