Two Union area Esports teams finished Top-3 at the 2024 Fall State Showdown last weekend. Both Washington and New London made the Top-3, with the Demons taking second and the Tigers taking third. The fall tournament was Super Smash Brothers.
Washington’s team, which features seniors Kyann Miller and Lucas (Lucky) Lindsey, sophomores David Ide, Elijah Ide, Luis Torrijos and Synder Ortega, and freshmen Tyler Burroughs and Colin Fritz, went 7-0 in the regular season to earn the No. 2 seed in the Class 2A bracket.
In the state tournament, Washington beat Hampton-Dumont CAL in the quarterfinals and Estherville-Lincoln Central in the semifinals. The Demons fell to the only other unbeaten team in Class 2A, as Forest City walked away with the championship.
New London went 7-0 in the regular season. The Tigers fell to eventual state champion Lake Mills in the quarterfinals, but rolled through the consolation bracket.
In the consolation bracket, New London took out Westwood and Belmond-Klemme to secure third place.
Fairfield failed to make the Class 2A state tournament after going 5-2 this season but losing all the tiebreakers. WACO was 3-4 in Class 1A.
