With the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association recognizing Washington High School in both of its rankings this season, the Demons are playing well.
Washington split a home doubleheader Thursday with Southeast Conference foe Fairfield, a 6-0 win and a 5-2 loss, the swept Keokuk on the Chiefs field Monday 10-6 and 22-0.
Kole Hinrichsen went the distance in the Fairfield shutout with seven strikeouts, five hits and a walk. Brant Stout had a double and a single while Brady Knutson and Ethan Patterson also had two hits apiece. Knutson drove in two runs.
The Demons used four pitchers in the loss, with Chase McDole the pitcher of record. Patterson threw three innings of relief with four strikeouts, a hit and a walk. Luke Turner went 2 for 3 and plated both runs.
Cade Hennigan got the 10-6 win with 3 2/3 innings pitched, allowing four hits, six earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts. Turner threw the final 3 1/3 innings and gave up a lone hit, two walks with three K's. Hennigan and Turner led the way at the plate with each going 3 for 4 and seven combined RBI. Stout had a triple and a double. Wilx Witthoft connected on two doubles, batting in two runs and Knutson had a double.
It took just five innings to ring up 22 runs, nine in the first and eight in the fifth. The Demons didn't score in the second inning.
McDole took the win with a pair of innings pitched and struck out five. Mitchell Driscoll fanned three and walked one in his two innings of work. Lucas Kroll whiffed two and walked one in one inning. None of the three allowed a hit.
Eleven different demons recorded a hit with Trevor Quigley going 3 for 5 with a double. Brandon Dickel hit a triple. The Demons were the recipients of 11 bases on balls.
The Demons have a 5-1 record, 3-1 SEC with a home doubleheader against Mt. Pleasant Thursday.
Iowa Mennonite starts 2-0
IMS has a 9-0 win over Winfield-Mt. Union Tuesday and a 3-1 triumph over Wapello Monday. Both SEISC North Division games were at home.
Blake Bontrager, who went 2 for 2 at the plate, threw a complete game against Wapello with seven strikeots, four walks and three hits. Noah Miller went 2 for 2 with two RBI and three stolen bases.
Eli Ours threw five innings for the W-MU win with just three hits allowed and eight strikeouts and no walks. Trevor Leyden pitched two innings, fanning five with a walk.
Bontrager, Jacob Boller and London Schrock had two hits apiece with Schrock connecting on a double. Boller and Bontrager had two RBI each.
IMS plays at West Burlington today.
