WASHINGTON — Less than an hour after Friday night’s boys basketball tournament game at Washington High School, the Demons’ home gym was littered with bull's-eyes, as the school prepared for the 2022 Orange and Black Shootout, an archery event which took place on Saturday.
The Demon’s high school archery team placed second overall, finishing the day with a final score of 3,287. That mark was behind only Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Jonathan Moore, who won the event with a 3,340.

Cardinal sophomore Paityn Carnes was the top female archer in the contest. Carnes beat out 34 other high school girls, shooting a 284 to take the top spot. Teammate Cameron Wheaton finished ninth on the girls’ side, to give the Comets two girls in the Top-10.
Mid-Prairie senior Zane Fisher took sixth place on the boy’ side, scoring a 283. Zoe Fisher, another Golden Hawk senior, took 10th on the girls’ side, shooting 270, and Paytin Swartzentruber, a junior, took 12th on the girls’ side with a 266.
