FORT MADISON — A rough Southeast Conference stretch for the Washington baseball team continued on Thursday night in Fort Madison, and then one night later at home.
The Demons suffered a pair of heartbreakers, dropping the series closer 4-3 at Fort Madison and then seeing a rally fall short in a 5-4 loss to West Branch.
Washington enjoyed an early 3-0 lead at Fort Madison, and seemed to be in good position to pick up its first SEC win. The Bloodhounds scored one run each in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings.
Conner Leyden knocked in two runs with a first inning single. Mason Morgan knocked in one.
Blayze Richardson led the Demons in hits, going 2-for-4, and also started the game on the mound. He would give up three earned runs over four innings. Caden Greiner gave up just one in relief but took the loss.
The Demons nearly erased a 5-1 deficit on Friday night against West Branch. Washington rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but that’s all the Demon offense could muster.
Richardson had another nice night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the loss. Luke Beenblossom finished 3-for-4.
