A total of 27 runs was scored in a matter of 8 1/2 innings Thursday, June 15, as the Demons dominated the field in both games of a doubleheader.
Washington won the first game 15-0 after four innings and they won the second game 12-0 after 4 1/2 innings.
The boys secured the victory thanks to nine runs in the second inning. Aaron Vittetoe scored on a double by Kiowa Keith.
Keith and Luke Turner scored on a single by Michael Gier,
Both Gier and Cade Hennigan, pinch running for catcher Bryce Craff, scored on a single by Zach Londberg.
Ryan Loy and Londberg scored on a Fort Madison error and Vittetoe scored again, this time on a single by Keith.
Gier hit a solo home run in the third inning, to put the score at 10-0 before the final five runs scored in the fourth.
Crossing the plate were Londberg, Vittetoe, Erik Murphy , Turner and Gier.
Zear earned the win for the Demons. He threw four innings, giving up zero runs, two hits, striking out eight, and walking zero.
Jordan Gerdes took the loss for Fort Madison. He went three innings, surrendering 12 runs, eight hits, and striking out five.
An early lead helped propel the Demons to victory in the second game. Loy scored on a single by Vittetoe.
Vittetoe then scored on a triple by Zear, and Zear crossed the plate on a single by Keith in the first inning.
The boys scored five runs in the second inning, thanks to a single by Londberg, a double by Vittetoe, and a single by Zear.
Scoring for the Demons were Jacob Hall, Gier, Loy, Londberg and Vittetoe.
The final four runs came in the third when Gier, Loy, Vittetoe and Zear each crossed the plate.
Kole Hinrichsen earned the win for Demons in the second game. He went five innings, surrendering zero runs, one hit, striking out five, and walking zero.
Lennon Barker took the loss for Fort Madison. He pitched two innings, surrendering eight runs, eight hits, and striking out two.
The Demons collected 11 hits. Vittetoe, Zear, Ryan Loy, and Keith each collected multiple hits for Washington Demons.
The reason for both wins came from the mound, said coach Nathan Miller.
?It starts out with pitching,? he says. ?Both guys did an excellent job. Zear threw 49 pitches in four innings.
?When you talk about efficient, I think he had eight or nine strikeouts in those innings.
?Kole Hinrichsen ended up with something like 51 pitches through five innings.
?When you start doing the math, they threw strikes. They got ahead in the pitch count, threw breaking balls really well tonight and our defense played really solid.
?Offensively, all the way through the lineup we had hits. Guys were going to the plate with confidence as well as with an approach and a plan.
?We were very aggressive, which is what we needed tonight. We needed to put runs on early and end any type of momentum they [Fort Madison] may muster up. It was a great effort by our guys.?
Scoring nine runs in the second inning of the first game, may be a little bit unusual for some teams, but not for the Demons, Miller says.
?We?ve done it several times already this year,? he says.
?Once things get rolling and we start seeing the ball well, this team is a very good hitting team. There?s no doubt about that.?
The team plays at Fairfield Monday, June 19, and they are hopeful they will do well.
?They are a team we out-hit 24-17 at our place,? Miller says.
?We feel like if we can throw strikes like that and we can play defense like that, we are hoping to have a better outcome Monday, than we did our last meeting.?
The boys have an 11-5 record. They play at Fairfield Monday, June 19, starting at 5:30 p.m.
