WASHINGTON — Washington baseball has had a hard couple of weeks on the ball diamond.
The Demons had dropped five straight, but on Monday against Keokuk they ended the slide while splitting with Chiefs.
Washington was victorious in the game one, 12-10, but fell in the second 11-0.
Game one was a dogfight between both teams.
After two innings, it was all knotted up 3-3, but Washington had the offense rolling in the bottom of the third.
The Demons were hit by a pitch twice in a row to get runners on.
Ethan Patterson then delivered with a two RBI single to make it 5-3. Lucas Kroll then loaded the bases with a single and Kole Williams drove in a run with a single himself. Patterson crossed home on a wild pitch giving the Demons a 7-3 lead.
Ethan Zieglowsky was hit by a pitch to load the bases once again, but the Chiefs got out of the jam.
The Washington lead was short-lived at Keokuk would make it a one run game, 7-6, by the end of its fourth.
Keokuk scored off an RBI single and a two out two RBI single in the inning.
Although the Chiefs brought it to within one, the Demons were quick to pull away once again, scoring five in the bottom of the fourth.
With two outs within the first three at bats, the Demons showed poise at the plate.
Isaac Vetter drove in a run with a sac fly. Patterson notched himself an RBI single. Then an error and four straight walks gave the Demons three free runs with the bases loaded.
The Demons had the game in their grasps, but the Chiefs didn’t go down easily.
Keokuk scored four runs in the top of the fifth to bring it within two, 12-10, but Washington was able to hold on in the final two innings.
In game two, the Demons struggled.
After two innings, Keokuk built a 7-0 lead. Washington never had an answer with the bats.
Neither team scored in the third and fourth, but Keokuk added four runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it an 11-0 game.
Washington then had a chance to survive, but went three up three down ending the game in five.
