WASHINGTON — The Washington girls basketball team’s season came to an end on Saturday night with a 39-28 loss to Davis County in the Class 3A Region 5 opening round.
The Demons and Mustangs were neck and neck for over 23 minutes of action in the 3A regional quarterfinal. Five points was the most that separated the two squads for nearly three full quarters.
Washington found itself down 24-19 with over three and a half minutes to go in the third. A free throw from Addison Miller, followed by a two from Kendall Hinrichsen got the Demons to within two, 24-22.
But the Mustangs extended their lead within the final minute. Davis County held its largest lead of the game to that point, 26-22, and ended with a 5-0 run to make it 29-22 heading into the fourth.
Washington didn’t get discouraged as a Kendall Hinrichsen three started what was a 4-0 run to begin the final period and make it a three point game, 29-26.
To the Demons dismay, it was all Davis County after that.
A three ball from the Mustangs kicked off what was a 10-2 run to the final whistle.
“I’m just proud of the heart they played with,” Washington head coach Shannon Rugg said. “That’s something that we really preach. We really have to play hard and they did that all year long. I think that’s because of our senior leadership. They led by example and they’ve been very vocal of what they wanted to do. They brought so much to this group and really did a great job. I’m just really proud of how we played all year long, we just struggled to put the ball in the basket tonight.”
Through the first two quarters, Washington led 11-8 after the first and Davis County held the advantage 20-16 at the break.
Kendall Hinrichsen led the way with nine points. Jacey Berg and Addison Miller both had six points as well.
Washington ends its season with a record of 8-13.
The Demons will say goodbye to five seniors in Jacey Berg, Taylor Bartholomew, Maci Williams, Aliyah Jara and Sadie Van Der Molen.
