Washington basketball topped by Notre Dame
Demon boys and girls can’t slow Nikes in doubleheader

BURLINGTON — Washington boys and girls basketball had a tough night of action on Monday.
Both teams came out on the losing end of a road matchup against Burlington Notre Dame, with the girls falling 70-45 and the boys 58-49.
In the girls contest, the Demons hung around for much of the first half.
The Demons trailed by just one after one quarter, 14-13. The battle continued into the second, as both squads topped their first quarter total. The Nikes scored 20 points in the quarter and Washington followed closely with 15.
At the break, Notre Dame led 34-28.
The third quarter made a big difference in the games outcome. Washington’s 11 third quarter points were its least of the night. Notre Dame went on to put in 21, giving them a 55-39 advantage into the fourth.
Both teams were evenly matched in the fourth, 15-15, and Notre Dame pulled out the victory.
Adalyn Long led the Demons with 15 points. Leighton Messinger added 11.
Washington moves to 6-4 on the season.
On the boys’ side, Washington got down early and could never make up the difference.
After one, Washington trailed by just two, 13-11.
Notre Dame was able to create breathing room for itself after a 19-15 second quarter, thus increasing the Demons deficit.
At the final horn of the first half, Washington trailed 32-26.
The Demons were able to get some momentum in the third, taking the quarter by one, 14-13, cutting the Nikes lead to just five, 45-40.
Washington wasn’t able to get back on top in the final quarter though as Notre Dame closed it out with a 13-9 period.
Ethan Patterson finished with 21 points and was the lone Demon in double-figures.
With the loss, Washington drops to 5-5.
Both Washington squads will take on Keokuk on Friday night.
