The Washington girls basketball team fell just short of a ranked upset Monday night. The Demons maintained pace with No. 11 Tipton, but 20 fourth quarter points by the Tigers allowed them to pull away for a 48-40 victory.
Washington won the third quarter 12-11 and took a 33-32 lead in the fourth after a 3-pointer by Adalyn Long. Tipton countered with a 9-1 run, but Washington managed to trim its lead back to four with under a minute to play.
Holding a 44-40 advantage with 44.3 seconds left, Tipton iced the game with a three-point possession after Long was called for an intentional foul, giving Tipton two free throws and the ball back. Paityn Daedlow split the first two foul shots and Averie Bolger sunk two more after being fouled on the ensuing possession.
The makes pushed the Tigers’ lead to seven with 29.4 to play. They sank a final free throw after Washington came up empty on its next possession.
Washington was down by three at halftime after limiting Tipton to just four points in the second quarter. The Demons defense held Tipton to 2 of 16 from the 3-point line, but shot just 27.3% from the field compared to 32.5% for the Tigers.
The Demons also lost the rebounding battle 37-28 and surrendered 16 offensive boards. Tipton won the turnover battle 12-10.
Reagan Miller led Washington in scoring for a second straight game. After bagging 14 points in a 43-21 win over Oskaloosa, she finished with 11 off the bench Monday and added three rebounds, one assist and two steals.
Long was also in double figures with 10 points and added four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Leighton Messinger finished the night with eight points, two boards and an assist.
Vivienne Kroll scored five points and led the Demons on the glass with seven rebounds. Oaklee Sobaski and Addison Miller each scored two points and grabbed five boards. Sarah Berdo finished with two points and a pair of rebounds off the bench.
