WASHINGTON — Inclement weather can be a great equalizer in the game of soccer, but it wasn’t enough to hold back the Demons on Monday at Washington Wellness Park.
Washington poured on the goals against Southeast Conference rival Fairfield, beating the Trojans 8-0.
The Demons scored a couple of easy goals just under two minutes apart. Alex Murphy started things off with a goal off a cross, as the clock showed 24 minutes, 48 seconds in the first half. Audrey Anderson followed that up with a goal of her own to make it 2-0 early.
Fairfield would hold off Washington for nearly 20 minutes in the first half as Ivy Larson made save after save in net. Despite having a heavy wind at their backs, the Demons could only get one more past Larson before the half finished up.
Savannah Hollander nearly cut the lead in half with just over 10 minutes left, but Aleigha Medley made the save, and the Trojans wouldn’t get many more quality chances.
Giselle Marcelino finally broke through for the Demons, sending one in from the middle of the box to make it 3-0 Washington. The Trojans, however, had only given up a few and were set to have the weather advantage for the next 40 minutes.
In what was more of a cross wind in the second half, the Demons showed improvement on offense. Washington scored five goals in the second half, including two more by Murphy.
“For some reason we like attacking against the wind,” joked Washington head coach Mason Quigley. “I think we just really like the challenge.”
Other Washington goal scorers in the second half were Marcelino and Angeline Anderson.
By the end of the game, the Demons were threatening to put two more up and win by a 10-goal mercy rule, but Fairfield staved off any more goals in the last 20 minutes.
“To be honest, I'm kind of surprised we got as many as we did,” said Murphy after the game. “The last time we played with wind like this, we didn't score that many.”
The win made it two in a row for a Washington team that had previously lost three straight.
“Winning is fun,” Murphy said. “Especially a win like that, when the team is having fun and we're all playing well.”
The Demons moved to 8-4 overall and 4-4 in SEC play. The Trojans fell to 0-10 overall and 0-8 in the league.
