The outcome of the final regular-season game for the Washington boys basketball team was not the ending they wanted, Tuesday, Feb. 14, as the Williamsburg Raiders beat the Demons with the final score of 57-30.
Washington started out in the lead after the first quarter going up 14-10, but Williamsburg rallied in the second quarter to have a 22-16 lead at the half, and would keep the lead the rest of the game as they were up 47-23 after the third quarter and would end up winning the game.
Jack Redlinger led the team with 11 points. Tanner Coleman scored seven points, Mason Rich had five points, John Dillon scored four, Cale Hobscheidt had two points and having one point from a free throw was Jacob Van Osdol.
?It?s credit to Williamsburg,? said Washington coach Collin Stark regarding the loss. ?I can always say that we didn?t shoot the ball very well, but at the same time, it?s also that they played solid defense. It?s where you just have to continue to work.
?There were times where there were lulls both offensively and defensively. To win a game, you can?t have those. We tried to stay positive in the locker room saying that ?the real season starts now.? We asked the seniors how they wants us to finish and they all said that they want to compete and they want to bring hopefully their best game Monday. Whether we win or lose, hopefully we play the best we are possibly able to play so that we feel good after that game.If we lose, hopefully we play our best game. If we win, that obviously means we played our best game in beating Oskaloosa.?
To get ready for next week the team will work on defense, Stark said.
?We will work on getting our shots up as well. Tonight, I thought our 1-3-1 worked in the first half and then defensively, in the second half, it wasn?t quite to the level that it was in the first half, ? he said.
Going into Oskaloosa, the team will think back to when they played them earlier in the season. ?It?s hard to face them because of their size. We don?t have someone who is 6-feet-10 and 6-feet-8 like they do. I think the majority of it will be go against what they do but it?s also about what we do.?
The team?s next game is at 8 p.m., Monday, Feb. 20, at Oskaloosa.
