FAIRFIELD ? The Washington Demon boys? soccer team suffered a 3-1 road loss to Fairfield Thursday, April 13.
The Demons (2-2 overall, 0-2 Southeast Conference) trailed 1-0 at halftime. With 20:51 left in the game, Washington?s Caleb Suchan scored, tying the contest.
Fairfield?s Brayden Miller tallied twice in the final 10-minutes of the game.
For the entire contest, Fairfield (2-1, 2-0) outshot the Demons 17-12.
Standing out in this game for Washington was junior goalie Thomas Zimmer. Zimmer stopped five point-blank, short Fairfield shots in the first half.
In the second half, Zimmer was even better, stopping nine well-placed shots. His aggressiveness repeatedly frustrated the Trojan forwards.
?I feel like we started off slow tonight,? Zimmer said.
?We didn?t bring the hustle. We had a long week without a game. This was our only game this week.
?They got one on us in the first half. But we equalized late in the game.?
Among others, forward Tristin Westphal-Edwards helped keep the pressure on Fairfield with some solid passes and smooth moves.
Still, it was Zimmer?s second-half saves that kept the Demons within striking distance.
He ended the day with 12 saves.
?I just hate losing,? Zimmer said. ?And I hate losing to conference opponents, especially.
?Last year, we got destroyed by Fairfield, like, 9-0 and 7-0, and I did not want that to happen tonight in this game.
?I do think we can go far this year. Our potential is unreal if we bring the hustle.?
Coach Sally Hart says of the game, ?My team played the full 80 minutes.
?When Caleb Suchan scored off an assist from Logan Escher to tie the game it felt like we had momentum going our way and that we'd be able to find a second goal.
?Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. We need to continue to work on pressuring the ball and being quicker. We look forward to hosting Fairfield later in the season.?
The boys fall to 2-2 and will play Monday, April 17, at IMS starting at 5 p.m.
