It came down to the final seconds of the game, but the Washington boys soccer team beat Fort Madison Friday, April 21, by a 2-1 score, with Caleb Suchan scored the game-winning goal.
The Demons were down 1-0 at halftime. Midway through the second half Abdullah Talal crossed the ball to Kyle Anderson, who headed the ball into the net to tie the game, 1-1.
Play went back and forth all the way into the last minute.
With about 20 seconds left on the clock, Caleb Suchan received a pass from John Dillon in the center of the field.
Suchan then dribbled through the defense and took a shot at about the 18 line.
The strong shot was good for a goal with 10 seconds left in the match. The Demons quickly took control of the ball and let time run out. Thomas Zimmer had five saves on the night.
?This is my first conference win on the coaching staff,? said coach Sally Hart. ?Tonight, April 24, we play at Mt. Pleasant.?
She says looking forward to the game, ?Overall, the team is now firing on all cylinders, the guys are working together, controlling the pace of the game, communicating, and moving the ball well.
?It took the entire team to get the win Friday, and they all deserve a big congratulations for playing hard the entire 80 minutes to get that conference win.?
The game at Mt. Pleasant starts at 4:30 p.m.
