The Washington boys track team was part of the Denny White Relays in Mt. Pleasant Thursday, April 13, where the team finished in fifth place out of 20 teams and did well in setting new records.
?There were 12 new PRs set,? says coach Steve Roth. ?We had an outstanding night. The young kids are really stepping up.
?Mario Tapia ? he?s on four relay teams and has some great splits. I?m really excited to watch him run the rest of the year. Freshman Ethan Hunt has really stepped up. He had high 53s and low 54s, in three 400s. I like to see the kids progress, especially as a freshman. It helps us out a lot.?
Even though the temperature wasn?t ideal for all of the runners, they didn?t let that stop them, Roth says.
?The distance did well despite the heat because it was hard on them. Everyone really stepped up,? he says. ?It?s a good way to go into the Easter break.?
The next time the boys take to the track is Tuesday, April 18, at Mid-Prairie in Wellman. Roth says that meet is the last time to qualify for the Drake Relays. But getting everyone to that point has their work cut out for them.
?We have to get to the 45.2 or 45.3 mark in the 4x100,? he says. ?Caleb Bex needs to drop a little bit in the shuttle hurdles and in the high hurdles, as well as in the distance.?
The track meet in Wellman begins at 5 p.m.
