WELLMAN — The Washington baseball team had a couple of losses to end last week, falling twice in on the road.
On Thursday, the Demons challenged a tough Burlington squad all the way down to the final pitch before being walked off in a heartbreaking 11-10 loss. On Saturday, Mid-Prairie took the Demons down 11-0 in five innings.
In one of the biggest slugfest’s of the Southeast Conference season, Washington trailed Burlington 6-5 after just two innings. The Demons went on top 9-6 with a four-run fourth inning, but Burlington rallied back with one in the bottom of the fourth and two in the fifth to tie things up at 9-9.
Washington took the lead after scoring the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. The Demons entered the bottom of the seventh with a 10-9 lead, but Burlington, and Washington had two outs with the bases loaded with Grayhounds. Burlington’s Ian Mason delivered the dagger, a two-run RBI single to right to knock in two runs.
Despite the loss, it was a big night for Luke Beenblossom, who went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Caleb Zieglowsky was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Kael Williams knocked in two runs and scored four, and the trio of Blayze Richardson, Conner Leyden and Joel Meyer each knocked in one run.
The Demons held Mid-Prairie scoreless in all but two frames, but that was the problem, as the Golden Hawks put up six runs in the third and five in the fourth to beat their Washington County rivals.
Bowen Burmeister no-hit the Demons in a five-inning complete game. He walked five batters, but struck out six to shutdown the Washington offense.
Landry Gingerich had a big game offensively for the Golden Hawks, going 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs. Tatem Telfer went 1-for-2 with three RBIs, and Brady Weber finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
