WASHINGTON — Washington and Fairfield boys and girls basketball faced off in a Southeast Conference doubleheader on Friday night.
The SEC rivals gave fans a back and forth affair that ended with the Demons walking away with a pair of conference victories.
In both games Fairfield held the early lead, but ended up falling to Washington 44-33 in the girls contest and 55-47 in the boys’.
Washington overcame an early Fairfield advantage in the girls’ game to take a one point advantage, 7-6, into the second quarter.
Following the low scoring first, the Washington offense came to life thanks to the likes of guard Oaklee Sobaski.
Sobaski gave the Demons a spark in the frame, by nailing four three balls. Sobaski’s shooting propelled the Demons to a 19 point second quarter, the highest point total by quarter on the night.
Despite the scoring surge from the Demons, the Trojans kept pace.
Fairfield went on to score 17 point of its own to keep the game within three at the half, 26-23.
To the Trojans dismay, they could never gain the edge on the Demons. Washington opened the second half on an 8-0 run, which culminated in a 12-3 third period.
Heading into the fourth, the Demons led 38-26 and they never let the Trojans get back into it.
For the Demons, Sobaski finished with a career-high 18 points. Kendall Hinrichsen added nine points. Sarah Berdo followed with six.
For Fairfield, Emma Metcalf dropped in 17. Elyse Setterstrom and Faith Jones both had five.
With the win, Washington improves to 1-1 in SEC play and 2-4 on the season.
Fairfield drops to 0-2 in conference action and 0-6 on the year.
The boys’ contest started similarly, with Fairfield jumping out to the early lead, 9-6, after one quarter.
Fairfield controlled for the majority of the second quarter, but the deficit never got out of hand for the Demons.
After 16 minutes of action, the Trojans held just a six-point lead over the Demons, 24-18.
Out of the half, Fairfield built as large as a seven-point lead, but Washington finally found its stride through the final half of the period.
The Demons capped off a 18-10 third quarter with a 15-6 run to give themselves a 36-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
For Washington, the deep ball played a major factor in the second half. In the final frame, the Demons knocked down four from beyond the arch to help them to a win.
Drew Conrad led Washington with 19 points, 17 of which came in the second half. Nic Stone added 13 points, while Logan McDole totaled 12.
The Demons move to 2-0 in SEC play and 2-3 on the year. The Trojans are now 1-1 in conference play and 1-4 on the year.
