Washington edges Highland at home tourney
Demons beat Huskies by 1 run, fall to Davenport West

WASHINGTON — For the first time since 2020, the Washington and Highland softball teams were able to meet up on the diamond on Saturday, as part of the Demons’ home tournament.
The two teams battled it out all morning long. Washington had just enough to put away Highland, 4-3.
Washington held a one-run lead after scoring in the bottom of the second. Highland responded with one in the third to tie things up. The Demons scored two in the fifth, and Highland once again struck right back, plating two to tie the game at 3-3.
Washington scored the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. For once, the Huskies couldn’t respond, as relief pitcher Halle Cuddeback came in and earned the save.
Bella Salazar started the game for Washington. She gave up five runs (three earned) on five hits, while striking out two batters over five innings of work. She was also 1-for-3 with a double at them late.
Ella Greiner went 3-for-4 with an RB Ito lead the offense. Leighton Salazar was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Kendall Hinrichsen went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Highland’s Lilly Barre went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Payton Brun was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Grace Prybil took the loss for Highland, giving up three runs (two earned) over four innings. She struck out two Demons in the loss. Jessica Kraus struck out one and gave up one earned run over two frames.
Washington moved on to play Davenport West in their next game. The Demons held a 2-0 lead early, and a 5-4 advantage after a wild fourth inning that saw seven total runs cross the plate, but Davenport West scored two in the fifth to steal the lead back, and the Falcons ended up winning 6-5.
Alyvia Anderson had a nice games or the Demons against Daenport West, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Greiner was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Leighton Salazar went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, and Hinrichsen knocked in one run.
Colbig Greiner started the game for Washington in the circle. She gave up four earned runs on six hits and three walks. Cuddeback and Bella Salazar each pitched in relief.
