Washington eighth-grade girls finish fourth at Fairfield Relays

The Washington eighth-grade girls? track and field team opened its season on Monday, finishing fourth at the Fairfield Relays.

The Demons won one event and scored 59 team points. The host Trojans won the meet with 130 points, and Mt. Pleasant was second with 101 points. Aldo Leopold edged Washington by five points for third place.

Washington?s quartet of Alexis Turner, Rose Smith, Madysen Hinrichsen and Emily Hora won the 4x400 relay in 5:02.45, and the distance medley relay team of Turner, Olivia Postl, Smith and Mariah Howard took second place in 5:09.13.

Howard took second place in the 1,500-meter run in 5:58.86, and teammate Maggie Voss finished sixth in 7:15.73. Howard also placed fifth in the 800-meter run in a personal-best time of 2:59.03.

Jessie Buchholz came in third in the 200-meter hurdles in 31.89 seconds, and she also anchored three relays that all finished third. The 4x100 relay team of Bella Giardino, Lexi Redlinger, Lexi Evans and Buchholz took third place in 57.82 seconds, and the 4x200 squad of Turner, Giardino, Evans and Buchholz was third in 2:05.28. Washington?s shuttle hurdle relay team of Evans, Redlinger, Hinrichsen and Buchholz finished third in 1:19.57.

Emily Hora took fifth place in the 400-meter dash in a personal-best time of 1:13.97, and Postl finished sixth in the 200-meter dash in 31.78 seconds. The sprint medley relay team of Postl, Krystra Jackson, Hora and Turner finished sixth in 2:21.34.

Postl had a personal-best leap of 13 feet, 5.5 inches to finish fifth in the long jump, and Daniela Diaz took sixth place in both the shot put and the discus. She threw the shot 20 feet, 2 inches, and she tossed the disc 57 feet, 1 inch.

The Washington eighth-grade girls? track and field team will travel to the Fort Madison Invitational on Monday. The meet will begin at 4:30 p.m.
