Washington boys basketball dropped a Southeast Conference clash against Ft. Madison on Friday. The Demons suffered a 55-45 defeat, their third in a row after losses to Mt. Pleasant and Mid-Prairie.
The Demons couldn’t replicate the offense they produced in their Jan. 2 game Ft. Madison, an 86-65 drubbing. Washington finished with just over half that total Friday in a gritty matchup.
Both teams were limited offensivly through the first three quarters. Ft. Madison broke through in the fourth, scoring 21 points after a buzzer-beating layup by Nolan Guzman gave the Bloodhounds a 34-33 lead entering the final stanza.
Ft. Madison only a four-point advantage with two minutes left. A bucket by Darius Foy extended the Bloodhounds’ advantage to six, but Tate Greiner couldn’t answer with a 3-point attempt on Washington’s next possession.
The miss forced the Demons to start fouling with less than 90 seconds to play. Washington also committed turnovers on its next two possessions.
Foy gave Ft. Madison an important advantage in the paint. The Bloodhounds won the rebounding battle 36-19 behind 18 boards from the 6-foot-10 junior. Foy also added 19 points, living around the rim all game.
Eight of Foy’s boards came on the offensive end. Ft. Madison grabbed 15 O-boards to just one for Washington.
Guzman led all scorers with 21 points. Four of his seven made free throws came in the final two minutes and he added six rebounds, one assist and a steal.
Neither team scored more than 15 points in a quarter until the Bloodhounds’ offensive display in the fourth. Ft. Madison held a 15-11 lead after one and was up 21-19 at halftime after a second quarter that saw just 14 combined points.
Both teams struggled shooting from 3-point range in a low-scoring affair. Washington made one more 3 than Ft. Madison, but shot just 3 of 12 for the game compared to 2 of 9 for the Bloodhounds.
Ft. Madison won the turnover battle 13-8. The Bloodhounds also shot 14 more free throws than Washington, going 11 of 19 compared to 4 of 5 for the Demons.
Kael Williams had a strong outing for Washington with 14 points and five rebounds. Drew Conrad was also in double figures with 10 points.
Rajan Roth finished with nine points, five rebounds, two assists and four steals. Nic Stone added seven points and four rebounds.
