Nic Stone took over the game early for the Washington boys basketball team against Carlisle. The junior scored 20 points in the first two quarters, buying a few deep 3-pointers over the Wildcats defense.
Stone threatened to help Washington pull away with his best scoring performance of the season. But Carlisle flipped the script in the second half. Stone was held to just seven points in the final two quarters and the Wildcats maintained their offense to hand Demons a 60-46 defeat Tuesday night.
Washington was down by just two points at halftime, but a 6-0 run in the final 1:45 of the third gave Carlisle a cushion. The Wildcats ran efficient transition offense and expended that run to 11-2 early in the fourth to take a 10 point lead that was insurmountable for the Demons in the final minutes.
Washington was notably battling without one of its top scorers, senior Drew Conrad, who suffered an ankle injury in the Demons’ 66-43 win over Tipton. Without Conrad’s driving ability and presence in the backcourt, Carlisle was able to hone in on Stone in the second half and limited Rajan Roth to just eight points.
Kael Williams also chipped in eight points for the Demons. Tate Greiner logged three points.
Washington initially looked like it would have a balanced scoring night despite Conrad’s absence. Stone helped the Demons take a 9-4 lead with two 3-pointers. Greiner hit his lone triple and Roth scored four of his eight points in the first period.
The Wildcats countered through their own scoring depth to quickly comeback and outpace the Demons in the second half. Top scorer Trey Osterhaus scored 24 points, just above his season average of 23.1, which puts him among the top five scorers in Class 3A.
Carlisle’s supporting cast succeeded in aiding its top scorer. Junior Hayden Schulte matched Osterhaus for much of the game and finished with 15 points. Senior Kael Streeter entered Tuesday’s contest averaging 5.6 points per game, but finished the night with 13.
Washington (8-5, 3-3 Southeast Conference) will try and bounce back when it returns to SEC action against Fairfield. The Demons beat the Trojans 57-39 on Dec. 12.
Tipoff between Washington and Fairfield is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Washington High School. The game will be streamed on the Southeast Iowa Live YouTube and Facebook pages.
