Football is back on Friday night and for the Washington Demons the 2023-24 season begins on the road with a trip to Oskaloosa.
It’s not the first time the Demons and Indian’s have met on the gridiron, but it’s the first meeting between the two team since 2019. That matchup ended with Washington on top 62-12.
Things are going to look a little different for the Demons on both sides of the ball this season as they lost a plethora of talent from a year ago.
Washington will be without 2022 starting quarterback Ethan Patterson, starting running back Tayven Stuart and leading receiver Jude Brown, among many others.
Luke Beenblossom, who caught 80 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown last year, is entering his senior year. Beenblossom is one of the few big names that will be entering their senior season.
On the defensive side of the ball, a slew of the Demons’ leading tacklers do make a comeback.
Senior Casen Evans finished second with 66 tackles last season. Senior Chase Greiner had 38.5 tackles. Senior Alec Ulin finished with 32, and senior Nicolaus Dittrich ended the year with 31.5.
Washington finished 5-4 last year.
Oskaloosa brings back starting quarterback Trevor Willett.
The Indians do have to replace their leading rusher, receiver and tackler. The second highest statistical player at each of those positions are back though.
A season ago, Oskaloosa finished with just one win at 1-8.
Washington and Oskaloosa are set to square off at 7:30 on Friday night at Statesmen Community Stadium in Oskaloosa.
