Washington gets 14 events to Class 3A meet

MT. PLEASANT - Washington won four events at the Class 3A district meet Friday and advanced another 10 to the state meet Thursday-Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
The boys team finished second in the team standings with 107 points behind Mt. Pleasant's 153. The girls were seventh with 57. Davenport Assumption won with 161.
The Demons advanced four girls events with Jenah Greiner placing second in the long jump at 16 feet, 9.5 inches, Isabel Bailey fifth in the long jump at 15-8.75, the 4x200 meter relay (1 minute, 49.37 seconds) and the 4x1 (51.18) both finishing third.
Greiner has the fifth-best qualifying jump in Class 3A for the state meet and Bailey is at 21 of the 24 that qualify for state in each event. The 4x1 of Leah Marek, Bailey, Greiner and Kelsey Pacha has the 14th best qualifying time. The 4x2 is 22nd with Bailey, Marek, Ashley Telleen and Greiner.
The boys had 10 events advance to state and achieved season bests in nine of those. The only one that wasn't was Mitchell Driscoll's win in the 400 meters in 51.68 seconds, which is 11th as a qualifying time.
Ethan Hunt won the 400 hurdles in 55.14 and qualified sixth.
Hunt ran on the winning sprint medley (1:35.79) with Cade Hennigan, Jacob Miller and Driscoll that qualified 13th.
Washington coach Steve Roth was especially proud of the winning 4x4 (3:30.27 with Driscoll, Luke Turner, Justin Simmering and Cade Hennigan) that qualified 15th.
'It was just an outstanding night from everybody,” he said. 'It is an accomplishment just to get to state. That is the toughest part.”
The shuttle hurdle was second in 1:01.98, qualifying 10th with Lincoln Kleese, Ben Schieffer, Spencer Sotelo and Hennigan.
Simmering was second in the 800 in 2:02.51, which is 16th.
Kleese led in the long jump for much of the day before placing second at 20 feet, 10.75 inches, which is seventh qualifying.
Hennigan's third place in the 110 hurdles in 15.59 qualifies him 17th. Kleese was fourth in the 110 hurdles and his time of 15.81 is 20th.
The 4x1 took fourth in 44.73 to qualify 20th with Kleese, Turner, Miller and Hennigan.
