Isabel Bailey refused to lose Friday in a Southeast Conference home against visiting Fort Madison.
Bailey's aggresive offense helped Washington to a 22-16 halftime lead. She spearheaded a defense that held the visitors without a point in the third quarter of the 41-24 win.
'There were just openings that I saw, so I had to drive in and take advantage of that,” Bailey said of her offense in the opening quarter when she scored seven of her team-high 10 points. She added a 3-pointer in the third quarter as the Demons pulled away.
An all-senior lineup started the game of Senior Night. Bailey was joined by Haylee Wilson, Kira Ropp, Allison Hippen and Tori Brush. Christina Brinning was the first substitute in the game. All six are seniors.
'My teammates have been great to work with,” Bailey said. 'These four years have been really fun. It is definitely sad that it is coming to an end. We all have fun, even in practice. I really enjoyed my teammates.”
First-year coach Shannon Rugg has also enjoyed coaching them.
'Being a new coach, they have made it extremely easy. This has been a great group of seniors to work with. They have done everything that we have asked of them. They should be proud of themselves.”
Although the season did not go the way the Demons hoped, it has still been an 'extremely fun year,” Rugg said. 'The seniors have laid the groundwork for what we are trying to do.”
Early Saturday afternoon, the Demons played Sigourney for the second time this year and lost 27-26. The previous meeting was a 31-29 loss on a late 3-pointer. The Demons have a record of 7-12 and host Mt. Pleasant Friday.
