IOWA CITY — The Washington girls soccer team advanced to the second round of the Class 1A Region 8 playoffs on Monday with a 1-0 victory over Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union.
It was a back-and-forth affair with neither side getting much offense going early on.
A 50th minute free kick from Washington’s Angeline Anderson would make all the difference. From around 20 yards out, Anderson struck the ball and it slipped through the legs of the Wildcat’s goalie to give the Demons the 1-0 advantage.
That’s all they would need.
Along with Anderson’s goal, Kate Flannery made two saves in goal.
For Columbus/WMU, Sarai Martinez and Alynna Leos both had two saves.
With the win, Washington has now won five out of its last six and move to 7-8. The Demons will take on Center Point-Urbana in the Region 8 quarterfinals.
Columbus/WMU ends its season with a record of 3-8.
