The Washington girls basketball team celebrated its players and accomplishments with a banquet Monday night after its 2025-26 season wrapped up.
Washington players were recognized with individual honors after the Demons finished the season with a 12-11 record and went 4-6 in Southeast Conference play. Washington defeated Fairfield 63-21 in its opening Class 3A Region 5 playoff game, and fell to Tipton in the regional semifinals.
Adalyn Long was named the team’s MVP and Defensive MVP. Long averaged 13.7 points and two steals per game, both team highs. The senior has tallied several postseason accolades, including first-team All-SEC and a 3A All-Southeast District honor form the Iowa Girls Coaches Association. Long will play in the IGCA senior all-star games Saturday.
Juniors Sarah Berdo and Jaedyn Moore were named most improved. Freshman Ashlynn Long was given a newcomer award.
Five players earned All-SEC recognition in a season that saw the Demons double their win total from 2024-25 under first-year head coach Colin Mulford. Senior Leighton Messinger and sophomore Reagan Miller were named to the all-conference second team, while seniors Addison Miller and Oaklee Sobaski earned All-SEC honorable mention honors. The Demons also had 11 players on the academic all-conference team.
“I couldn’t have gotten a better group of girls to have for my first year coaching,” Mulford told the Union after Washington’s playoff win over Fairfield. “Whether it’s the seniors, juniors, sophomores, freshmen, whether its varsity and JV, including all of them all together, I couldn’t have asked for better group.”
