Washington girls basketball drops two

BURLINGTON — Washington girls basketball dropped a pair of games to finish the regular season. The Demons were beaten 70-29 in a difficult matchup against Class 3A No. 5 Williamsburg on Monday, and lost a conference rematch 59-54 to Burlington on Tuesday.

A 24-point fourth quarter helped the Grayhounds pull out a narrow victory at home and sweep Washington for the season. Burlington took the lead for good with under two minutes to play after its full-court press forced back-to-back turnovers.

After Washington came up empty on its next possession, Mylee Stiefel converted an and-1 that put Burlington up 55-51 with 49 seconds left.

Both teams struggled in the third quarter, scoring just seven points each. Washington led 20-13 after the first and took a 30-28 lead into halftime.

The Demons struggled in the third quarter in Monday’s loss to Williamsburg. Washington was outscored 21-6 after only giving up 10 points in the second. The Demons struggled against a Raiders team that entered on a four-game win streak, and were held to single digits in the final three stanzas after scoring 10 in the first.

Adalyn Long led Washington with eight points and added two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Ashlynn Long scored seven points and Sarah Berdo chipped in six points, six rebounds and a block off the bench.

Washington finished the regular season with an 11-10 mark, including a 6-4 record in Southeast Conference play. The Demons now turn their attention to the Class 3A Region 5 playoffs, where it will face Fairfield in its first round game.

Tipoff between the Demons and Trojans is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at Washington High School. The game will be streamed on the Southeast Iowa Live YouTube and Facebook pages.
