Demons improve to 4-2 ahead of SEC clash

Washington girls basketball picked up its fourth win of the season Monday night. The Demons went on a long road trip to Grinnell, but left in high spirits after a 53-41 victory.
Senior Adalyn Long followed up her impressive showing against Fairfield - Long scored 21 points in the first half of a Demons win last Friday - with another efficient scoring display. Long led Washington with 19 points, shooting 5 of 9 from the field, including three made 3-pointers. She ended the first quarter with a buzzer beater from the top of the key several steps beyond the 3-point line that put the Demons up 17-8.
The Demons were dialed in from deep as a team, shooting 10 of 20 from 3-point range. Five players hit at least one 3. Ashlynn Long converted the Demons’ second buzzer-beating triple when she ended the third quarter with a make from the left wing.
Washington scored 20 points in the third after it was outscored 11-7 in the second. The Demons response out of halftime gave them a 14-point lead, which they protected in the fourth by dropping 19 points.
In addition to her scoring, Adalyn Long also had eight of Washington’s 14 steals. Leighton Messinger added three and led the Demons with nine rebounds along with three points.
Addison Miller and Ashlynn Long joined Adalyn Long in double figures with 10 points each. Miller added four boards and a steal, while Ashlynn Long grabbed two rebounds, dished out one assist and had a steal.
Ashlynn Long, Reagan Miller and Sarah Berdo combined to score 21 points off the bench for Washington. Miller finished with eight points, three rebounds and four assists. Berdo scored three points and had two boards, one steal and a block.
Washington (4-2, 1-1 Southeast) will continue conference play against Mt. Pleasant in its next game. The Panthers (1-5, 0-2) lost to Benton in their last game Monday.
Tipoff between Washington and Mt. Pleasant is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Washington High School. The game will be streamed on the Southeast Iowa Live YouTube and Facebook pages.
