Washington girls edge Grinnell, fall to Keokuk
Demons go 1-1 on back-to-back nights of action

WASHINGTON — The Washington girls basketball team had a good night on Thursday in Grinnell, but the Demons couldn’t parlay that into a win on the opening night of the Southeast Conference one night later.
The Demons used a second-half rally to come back and defeat Grinnell 40-36 on Thursday night. On Friday, visiting Keokuk was too much in a 60-32 defeat.
A defensive struggle had Grinnell leading 6-3 after one quarter and 21-14 at halftime on Thursday, but Washington buckled down and clawed back into the game.
The Demons scored a game-high 14 points in the third quarter to cut the Tigers’ lead to 30-28. Washington overtook Grinnell with a 12-6 fourth quarter.
The Demons were remarkably balanced in scoring on Thursday. Adalyn Long, Maci Williams and Addison Miller each scored seven points to colead the team. Jacey Berg scored six points. Kendall Hinrichsen and Oaklee Sobaski each scored four, and Sadie Van Der Molen finished with three.
On Friday, the Demons had a shot to pull a big win over defending SEC champion Keokuk, but the Chiefs’ pressure defense was disrupting things all night long.
Keokuk led 14-9 after one quarter and 30-16 at halftime. Demon turnovers piled up more in the second half, as Keokuk used an 18-4 third quarter run to- bust things open.
Long scored 14 points in the loss on Friday. Miller put up eight. Lauren Hinrichsen scored three. Kendall Hinrichsen and Taylor Bartholomew each scored two points, and the trio of Williams, Berg and Sobaski each scored one.
