Washington girls, Fairfield boys lead Union area at Demon Relays
Demon girls place second, Trojan boys third in annual event

WASHINGTON — The Iowa High School Track season continues to ramp up as the weeks go by.
Thursday was yet another big day for a handful of Union area boys and girls’ squads as Washington hosted its yearly Demon Relays.
The coed meet featured 13 girls’ teams and 12 boys’. On the girls’ side, Washington led the Union area with 101 points. The host Demons fell three points short to champion Tipton (104 points).
The Mt. Pleasant girls took third with 82 points. Hillcrest Academy (22 points) ended in eighth, Fairfield (20 points) ninth, Highland (5 points) 11th, Washington JV (4 points) 12th and WACO (1 point) 13th.
Meanwhile, Fairfield paced the Union area boys with 57 points and a third-place finish.
Washington (55 points) followed in fourth, Mt. Pleasant (24 points) took eighth, WACO (22 points) was ninth, Hillcrest Academy (20 points) placed 10th and Mid-Prairie (11points) was 12th.
Starting with the girls, Washington finished with two winners on the day and a ton of top five finishers. Sophomore Iris Dahl was one of those winners, taking the 3000-meter run in 10 minutes, 43.31 seconds. Dahl also took third in the 1500-meter in 5:17.77.
Dahl was also the anchor on the distance medley team that took second in 4:32.98. That team featured Ada Kendall, Jaedyn Moore and Eden Levetzow.
The other winner for Washington was fellow sophomore Leighton Messinger. Messinger took the crown in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 17.04. Ryen Pepper, who’s also a Demon sophomore, finished second in the event in 17.57.
In high jump, Messinger finished fourth with a leap of 4’8.
Messinger also helped the shuttle hurdle of Pepper, Nelly Ponce-Cruz and Kendall Hinrichsen to a win with a time of 1:13.01. Ada Kendall, Messinger, Emery Walton and Jaedyn Moore were fourth-place finishers in the 4x100, timing 52.12.
Abigail Kleese placed third in the 800-meter, clocking 2:35.54.
The freshman Moore took third in the 100-meter dash and fourth in the 200 meter for Washington as well. Taylor Miksch finished fourth in discus, tossing it 99-03 feet.
Kleese, Hinrichsen, Taylor Bartholomew and Lauren Horak took bronze in the 4x800, clocking 10:32.42.
The quartet of Kleese, Levetzow, Hinrichsen and Addison Miller placed fourth in the 4x400. They ran 4:36.06.
Mt. Pleasant picked up two first-place wins and a multitude of top five finishes as well.
Sophomore Alex Scott and Kynlee White went one and two in the 200-meter dash, clocking times of 26.90 and 27.01 respectively.
The other gold finish for Mt. Pleasant came in the 4x200. The quartet of Bailey Jalas, Kynlee White, Alex Scott and Andi Scott ran 1:48.73, good enough for a new meet record.
The Panthers notched four runner-up finishes. Savannah Slobodnik threw the discus 112 feet. Ella Ensminger finished second in shot put with a toss of 38 feet. The relays of the 4x100 and the sprint medley both took silver as well.
Courtney Raub, Alex Scott, Bailey Jalas and Andi Scott dashed to a time of 51.37 in the 4x100. Raub, Jalas, White and Alex Scott clocked 1:55.39.
Josie Gilmore placed third in the 100-meter hurdles after running a time of 18.52.
Gilmore, along with Linzy Striegel, Meadow Carter and Rellana Deuren finished fourth in the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle. The quartet ran 1:17.35. Alexis Wagner was a fourth-place finisher as well, finishing the 800-meter in a time of 2:43.09.
Fifth-place finishers for the Panthers were Andi Scott in the 100-meter, the distance medley of Kiyah Sanders, Olivia McCormick, Raub and Wagner and the 4x400 of Sanders, Monroe James, Natalie Freeman, White.
For Hillcrest Academy, the meet ended with four fourth-place finishes.
The sprint medley of Morgyn Nafziger, Niva Helmuth, Delaney Shaw and Rya Scott finished in a time of 2:02.42.
Scott in particular had a slew of top five finishes. She finished fourth in the 100-meter with a time of 13.18. Fourth again in the long jump, leaping 14-5.25. She also placed fifth in the 200-meter dashing to a time of 27.83.
Marie Yoder ended with two fourth-place finishes as well. Yoder ran a time of 11:35.35 in the 3000 and 5:21.46 in the 1500.
Fairfield had a number of top five finishers as well.
Freshman Samantha Lyons was a third-place finishers in the 400-meter dash, finishing in a time of 1:05.70.
Junior Lilly Bergren was a bronze medalist in the 400-meter hurdles for the Trojans. Bergren clocked 1:13.87. Bergren was also part of the 4x100 shuttle hurdle that took third, featuring Maya Lane, Maddy Martin and Lauren Martin. The quartet ran 1:14.55.
The Trojans 4x800 of Maddie Jones, Caroline Van Pelt, Carley Seeley and Addison Ferrel ran 11:24.79 for fifth.
Highland was led by Mackenzie Davis. Davis closed the 100-meter hurdles in fifth-place after posting a time of 18.74.
The 4x200 of Hailey Brun, Lilly Barre, Alexa Hahn and Grace Prybil took fifth as well after a time of 1:56.75.
The next two highest finishers for Highland were Brena Hazelett, who finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles, and Mackenzie Davis who placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles.
WACO had no top five finishers on the day, but Zoey Dennler was the Warriors highest placer. She took sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.84.
The next two highest finishes for WACO came in the distance medley and 4x100 shuttle hurdle. Both were seventh overall finishers.
On the boys’ side, Fairfield put together numerous top five finishes.
Pacing the Trojans was a pair of second-place finishes, coming from Eli Zillman in high jump and Ryan Giberson in the 110-meter hurdles. Zillman cleared 6’2 for second-place and Giberson got over the hurdles in 16.18. Giberson also finished fourth in the high jump. He cleared 6’0.
Fairfield also placed third in the 4x110 meter shuttle hurdle relay as Ian Aplara, Spencer McCready, Julian Pumphery and Giberson clocked 1:07.14.
The sprint medley of Dayson Workman, Brody Lyons, Tallon Bates and Gabe Tejada ran 1:40.05 for third.
Bates also took the bronze in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.69. Brody Lyons also competed in the 100-meter, finishing fourth with a time of 11.84.
Caden Allison, 132-09 feet, finished fourth in discus. The distance medley of Workman, Zillman, Dylan Adam and Tejada ran 3:51.27 for fourth and the 4x800 of Ben Boatright, Axl Starr, Aaden Regur and Aiden Porter finished fourth with a time of 9:36.45 for fourth.
The Washington boys had a pretty good result at their home meet.
In the wheelchair shot put, Josh Anderson threw 11-2.50 for first overall. Anderson also took second in the 401, 201 and 101 meter wheelchair events.
Other second place finishers for the Demons were Micah Rees, who ran 4:25.03 in the 1600-meter, and the distance medley of Keider Gomez Valdez, Alec Ulin, Logan McDole and Rees. The four clocked a time of 3:41.79.
Valdez, Ulin, Jayfred Espinosa and Conner Leyden took third in the 4x200 after posting a time of 1:35.81.
Other bronze finishers for Washington were Mason Morgan and Seth Shepherd. Morgan ran 16.83 in the 110-meter hurdles and Shepherd 54.10 in the 400-meter.
Andrew Rees, Tyler Alderton and Brennen Westphal all finished fourth for the Demons. Rees ran 10:24.59 in the 3200-meter, Alderton 2:09.33 in the 800-meter and Westphal 25.55 in the 200-meter.
Greyson Hartman (Discus), Carson Ryan (400-meter hurdles) and Tyler Alderton (3200-meter) all finished fifth. Jayfred Espinosa, Kael Williams, Conner Leyden and Seth Shepherd took fifth in the sprint medley as well.
Mt. Pleasant was led by two silver medalist, both coming in relays.
The 4x400 of Nate Stroud, Jude Dykstra, Jordan Lane and Payson Coleman ran 3:48.38 for second. The 4x100 of Hoang Quang, Mason Sloat, Coleman and Avin Truong posted a time of 45:33.
The quartet of Coleman, Sloat, Truong and Dykstra were fourth-place finishers in the sprint medley with a time of 1:40.43
Stroud place fifth in high jump after clearing 5’10.
WACO ended the competition with two fourth-place finishes and three fifth.
Gage Samo posted a time of 1:02.15 in the 400-meter hurdles for fourth and Louden Huisenga placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.48.
Clayton Miller finished fifth in the long jump with a jump of 18-04.00. The 4x110 meter shuttle hurdle of Huisenga, Samo, Casey Coakley and Miller finished in a time of 1:09.05 for fifth as did the 4x100 of Isaac Rich, Huisenga, Hayden Shelman and Miller. They ran 46.93.
For Hillcrest Acadmey, all 20 of its points came from Owen Scott.
Scott posted the three highest finishes of the day for the Raven taking second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.96.
He also finished third in the long jump after leaping 19-09.00. He also took the bronze in high jump after clearing 6’0.
Finally, Mid-Prairie was led by Jayden Stafford, who picked up four wins. Stafford posted times of 17.96, 34.36, 1:06.21 and 2:19.35 in the 101-meter, 201-meter, 401-meter and 801-meter wheelchair.
The Golden Hawk’s, Burke Berry took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 44-02.00. Jayse Yoder finished fifth in the 1600-meter with a time of 4:34.59.
In the 4x400, Keegan Bauwens, Shay Myers, Reece Waters and Evan Reschly posted a time of 4:24.77 for fifth as well.
Highland’s highest finisher on the day was Jackson Schneider, who placed ninth in the 110-meter hurdles. Schneider carded a time of 21.31.
