WASHINGTON — Washington girls basketball put together one of its most dominant performances of the season on Tuesday night at home against West Liberty.
The Demons only got better as the game went on, walking away with a 53-26 victory after 32 minutes of action.
Opening the scoring in the non-conference matchup was West Liberty. The Comets jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first two minutes, but once Washington got going they never missed a beat.
Washington’s first bucket came two and a half minutes in off a two from Addison Miller.
Miller’s score kicked off what was an 8-0 run for the Demons. Miller scored four of the eight, while Adalyn Long added the other four off a pair of free throws and a layin.
Washington’s now 8-3 advantage was cut to one off a quartet of points from the Comets, but that is as close as they would come.
The Demons closed on a 4-0 run to lead 12-7 heading into the second.
Through the second period, Washington kept up the pace while getting better on the defensive end.
Washington scored just 10 points in the frame, but held the Comets to only five.
It was a big quarter for the Demon’s Maci Williams. Williams dropped in six of Washington’s points in the frame.
At the half, Washington held onto a 22-12 lead.
The third period proved to be the best for both squads offensively, but by the end of it the Demons still held the reins.
West Liberty came as close as eight at 25-17 in the quarter, but Washington never let it slip any closer.
The Demons went on to outscore the Comets 13-5 to the end of the quarter, which included a three ball by Taylor Bartholomew with six seconds on the clock.
At the buzzer, Washington led West Liberty 38-22.
Washington put a stamp on it pretty early on in the fourth with some efficient scoring and stifling defense.
The Demons scored 11 straight before the Comets first basket at 3:24. In all, the Demons outscored the Comets 15-4 in the final quarter to seal it.
Adalyn Long led the Demons with 12 points and five rebounds. Maci Williams finished with 10 points and five boards as well. Addison Miller ended with nine points and pulled down five rebounds. Sadie Van Der Molen and Kendall Hinrichsen both had five points. Aliyah Jara had four points. Lauren Hinrichsen and Taylor Bartholomew each tallied three and Oaklee Sobaski had two.
Defense made all the difference for the Demons as they notched 19 steals in the win.
With the win, Washington jumps above .500 at 4-3. The Demons will be back in action on Friday when they host Mt. Pleasant (1-6).
