?What I?m going to take away from this year is never underestimate the heart of a group of girls that play together as a team.?
That?s what Washington girls golf coach Leonard Kull says about this year?s squad. ?I will remember that most about this group.?
He wasn?t sure how things were going to go at the start of the season.
?When we started the year, I didn?t know what we had,? Kull says.
?We had a good start from Sarah [Nacos], the next was Megan [Strabala], Allison [Vogel] and Carly [Burlingame]. They were from last year?s team.
?They were somewhat untested. I thought they responded well throughout the year.?
What about the others on the team?
?Emily Waite and Kaitlyn Mitchell were the others and Kristin Twinam filled out our seventh spot,? Kull says.
?I really respected the way they learned bout the game throughout the year.?
As for the state tournament, it was great watching Nacos do so well, Kull says. ?The bright spot going to the tourney was Sarah,? he says.
?She won the three-peat as a 4A medalist. That was something she?s been thinking about for the last month. She?s glad that it?s over, was successful and can move on.?
It was a stressful time for her, Kull adds. ?It was all self-imposed because she has high and lofty goals,? he says.
?Anything can happen in a tourney. She persevered. She needs to trust herself and things will turn out well.?
Kull offers a bit of advice to other coaches. ?If you?re going to start with a girls golf team, go find a Sarah Nacos,? he says. ?But it doesn?t end there, you?ll need three more.?
The golf season isn?t quite finished for Nacos. She will join boys golf member Dalton Myers in a co-ed meet in Ames happening Tuesday, June 6.
