Sobaski jumps to No. 5, Rees enters at 29
Washington cross-country fans appreciated Lance Sobaski’s jump in the rankings all the way to No. 5 when the individual rankings were updated Wednesday, but even more exciting was the boys team was ranked for the second consecutive week in Class 3A. A second Demon joined Sobaski in the individual Top 30 when Micah Rees was listed at No. 29. And that was still not the best news. The Washington girls team entered the rankings when the Iowa Association of Track and Field Coaches and Cross-Country Coaches released the second regular season team list Tuesday.
Washington head coach Stefanie Haworth, who placed 10th at state twice (in 1998 and 1999) running for the Demons has her alma mater’s program turning heads.
“We have never had both teams ranked at the same time before so we are pretty excited,” Haworth said. “It is still very early and we have a lot of work to do, but it is nice to see their hard work is paying off.”
The Demons won a meet last week over No. 3 (1A) Pekin and face a great test Thursday at Fairfield where Mt. Pleasant’s Abby Blint will run. Blint moved up to No. 13 from 26 in Class 3A rankings.
Danielle Hostetler continues to be the top-ranked 2A girl but there was a lot of movement behind her as teammates Mitzi Evan dropped to 12 from No. 6, Sydney Yoder is at No. 9 from 12, Jaden Yoder is 20 from 22 and Phoebe Shetler 21 from 23. The Golden Hawks are ranked first as a team, but longtime rival Williamsburg dropped to seventh from No. 2.
Danville-New London’s Ty Carr and the Bears as a team remained at No. 1 in 2A but teammates No. 3 Alexander Julian and No. 14 AJ Bonneson each dropped a spot. The girls team is ranked 16th for the second week in a row.
The Golden Hawk boys are ranked fifth in 2A. Mid-Prairie’s Thaddeus Shetler is 11th and Chandler Hershberger 29th.
Isaac Acosta of Columbus tumbled to 27 from 19 in 1A boys and the Wildcats fell to 19 from 14. In 1A girls, the Laurens of Pekin help bolster the No. 3 ranking for the Panthers team with Lauren Steigledger at 15 (13 last week) and Lauren Derscheid at 24 (28).

The most exciting finish in the 2020 Hillcrest cross-country meet was when Micah Rees of Washington (left) was able to maintain his kick to close a 10-yard gap in the last 70 yards and overtake Luke Ryon of Mt. Pleasant. Rees won the sprint to the finish for 30th place by 0.58 seconds. Rees entered the Class 3A individual rankings for the first time this week.(Doug Brenneman/Union)
