SIGOURNEY — Every possession mattered in Washington’s girls basketball showdown at Sigourney on Monday night, and the Demons needed one more positive one if they wanted to pull off a win.
In a game that was tight all night long, the Demon girls fell just one basket short of a road victory, falling to the hosting Savages, 40-38.
The Demons led 8-6 after one quarter and 20-15 at halftime, but Sigourney came back to tie the game up at 28-28 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Sigourney opened up a six-point lead with just two minutes left. Washington’s Elyse Hunt hit a layup to cut the lead to four points. Kaylin Long cut it back to one possession at 39-36 on a free throw, and Long made it a one-point game, at 39-38, when her layup fell with 53 seconds left.
Unfortunately for the Demons, that’s all they would get.
Washington did have one last chance to tie or win the game in the final seconds. Trailing 40-38 as time winded down, the Demons turned the ball over and Sigourney scrambled away with possession.
Hunt and Makenna Conrad each scored 10 points for the Demons in the loss.
Washington is now 1-5. It will take a 1-1 league mark into its Southeast Conference road game at Mt. Pleasant on Friday.
