WASHINGTON — Washington girls soccer had a big end to the week, securing a pair of Southeast Conference shutout victories. The Demon boys meanwhile, fell in a pair of matches in Muscatine.
The Demon girls first defeated Keokuk 4-0 on Thursday and then closed the weekly slate with a 2-0 win over Mt. Pleasant, a game that was rescheduled due to a referee shortage.
Washington scored once in each half to get by the Panthers. It was a big day for Demon junior Jocci Carter, who scored each of the Demons goals in the victory.
“Honestly, I kind of blackout right before I score,” said Carter after the game. “I don’t really know what happens, but I got really good crosses, and I got set up really well.”
Luna Cuevas assisted on one. Washington did well to thwart the Panthers attack as Aleigha Medley finished with just one save.
Against Keokuk, Angeline Anderson finished with two goals. Carter and Ana Mata each had a goal as well.
Maya Murphy and Luna Cuevas each had an assist against the Chiefs as well. Medley saved two balls in goal.
With the pair of wins, Washington moves to 5-3 on the season and 2-2 in SEC play.
The Washington boys on the other hand suffered a 3-1 loss to Central DeWitt and a 2-0 loss to Muscatine on Saturday.
The Demons gave up three goals against the Sabers in the first half, before scoring one in the second.
Against Muscatine, the two teams went scoreless through the first half, but the Muskies put two points on the board in the final 40 minutes.
With the two losses, Washington drops to 1-8 on the season. It’s the Demons fifth straight loss. Their currently 1-3 in SEC action.
