The postseason began for the Washington track teams on Thursday afternoon, and the Washington girls? team had the highlight of the night, claiming three titles at the Southeast Conference meet.
Washington took third in the five-team meet, scoring 76.5 points, behind Fairfield (103) and conference champion Mt. Pleasant 108.
Senior Kelly Wheeler claimed the lone individual title of the day, coming in a tight 100-meter dash final.
Wheeler edged out Keokuk?s Ya?Mia Ailes-Primes by .01 seconds in the race, claiming the conference crown with a 12.92.
?Kelly had a great race,? Washington girls? track head coach Stefanie Tschantz said. ?With about 10 meters to go she was in third and somehow found another gear and won by .01,? Tschantz said. ?It was definitely a photo finish, but I couldn?t be more proud of her. It was the start of a great meet for her.?
Wheeler followed up her 100-meter title by helping the Demons claim their other two conference crowns.
Wheeler joined forces with senior Amber Salow, junior Makenzi Marek and freshman Jenah Greiner, as the group claimed meet titles in the 4x100-meter relay and the sprint medley relay.
?The sprint medley and 4x100 both had great races,? Tschantz said. ?They left it all out there and were determined to win. They have all worked really hard and it was great to see them be conference champs in both of those events.?
Washington also had a number of close races at the top of the meet, with Jessie Buchholz taking second in the 100-meter hurdles, and Mackenzie Knutson claiming second in the 400-meter hurdles. Buchholz claimed third in the 400 hurdles as well, while Isabel Bailey claimed second in the long jump.
Washington saw its shuttle hurdle relay (Buchholz, Knutson, Carolan Hoffman and Emma Wood) and 4x200-meter relay (Salow, Bailey, Greiner, Wheeler) claim second at the meet.
The Demons will run in the state-qualifying district meet on Thursday in Mt. Pleasant.
