FAIRFIELD — When it comes to Southeast Conference (SEC) girls golf, no one has done it better than the Washington Demons.
The Demons six have been nothing short of outstanding this season as they were winners in every SEC tournament this season. Along with that, they have placed first 11 times this season and third once.
The latest of those victories came on Wednesday as the Demons picked up yet another SEC title at Fairfield Golf and Country Club.
Washington finished the conference tournament with a team low of 341. That was 44 strokes better than any other squad.
“It feels very nice,” Washington senior Makenna Conrad said of winning the conference title. “We have a lot of goals this season ending with state so it’s nice to complete as coach says ‘the first step’ in the postseason. It’s good to see we’re on track and everyone is playing some of their best golf.”
Fairfield earned the runner-up distinction with some great play. The Trojan’s six seniors totaled a 385 after 18 holes of action.
Mt. Pleasant finished sixth overall after shooting a 515 on the day.
Keokuk (399) finished third in the meet, Burlington (423) took fourth and Fort Madison (493) finished fifth.
While there was some great team play throughout the day, the individuals showed out as well with an plethora of low end scores.
For the Demons, the leading golfers were senior’s Makenna Conrad and Kaylin Long. The duo both finished with 83s to tie for second. After a cardback though, Conrad was named the conference runner-up, with Long taking third.
The meets medalist was Burlington’s Lauren Briggs with a pair of 39s, tallying an 78.
Also for the Demons, Adalyn Long notched a fourth-place after golfing a 86. Mallary Johnson finished sixth with an 89.
The four Demons were named all-conference for finishing inside the top six.
Haley Mitchell and Maci Williams both shot 98s for Washington as well.
As for Fairfield, the starting six played their final competitive round at home.
Viola Welsh grabbed herself a fifth-place finish after carding an 88 in the meet. Fifth overall earned her all-conference honors.
Myah Twohill finished with a 95 after two rounds of golf. Kate Pettit and Sara Kretz both shot a 101. Macy Rayburn ended with a 103 and Maggie Rayburn a 105.
For Mt. Pleasant, junior Kylie Walderbach led the way with a final score of 101.
Junior Elaina Holtkamp and freshman Felicity Metcalf both had 131 when all was said and done. Rounding out the Panthers in the conference finale was Ashlynn Beauchamp with a 152.
All three teams will be back in action on Wednesday, May 17 with a state tournament trip on the line.
Washington and Fairfield will head to Oskaloosa for the Class 3A Region 3 tournament, while Mt. Pleasant will compete in the Class 3A Region 5 tournament at Twin Pines Golf Course in Cedar Rapids.
