Washington golf teams start hot
Demons take top spot for boys and girls in Kalona triangular

KALONA — The 2022 golf season got off to a strong start for the Washington golf teams on Thursday. The Demons walked out of a triangular against Mid-Prarie and Columbus with a pair of wins.
The Washington boys shot 192, besting the Golden Hawks’ 220 and the Wildcats’ 279. The Demon girls defeated Mid-Prairie 179-210, Washington’s first win under new head coach Erin Thorius. Columbus’ girls’ team did not compete.
The Demon boys were paced by overall placewinner Roman Roth, who shot a 44. Luke Beenblossom finished at 46 to win the runner-up medal.
Teague Mayer took third for Washington, finishing the day off at 50. Isaac Vetter shot 52. John Proschaska finished at 53, and Grant Sobaski ended the day with a 54.
Mid-Prairie’s Drew Schlabaugh shot a 48 for third place overall. Ian Schmidt shot a 49 to put two Golden Hawks under 50. Ben Mattes finished at 59. Carson Pence shot 64, and Warren Scharff rounded out the Mid-Prairie scores with a 66.
Columbus’ top golfer on the day was Robert Coil, who finished at 52. Grant Waston shot 59. Ryan Coil ended at 68, and Mason Heck shot 100.
Washington had the Top-4 scores on the girls’ side. Kaylin Long won medalist honors, shooting a 39, including a birdie and an eagle in her last two holes.
Makenna Conrad shot 43 for the Demons. Alecia Goff finished at 48. Maci Williams shot 49. Reagan Strouder finished at 64, and Haley Mitchell ended at 69.
Mid-Prairie’s top girls golfer on the day was Gabi Robertson. She finished out at an even 50. Madelyn Bender was right behind her, at 51.
Madi Davidson was the third Golden Hawk on the girls side. She shot a 53. Elliot Debler and Alexa Huber finished out at 56 each, and Madison Witthoft closed her day out at 67.
