Washington hosted a press conference last week to kick off the fall sports season.
The Demons had players and coaches from football, volleyball and cross-country speak with the media regarding the upcoming season.
Washington football will be looking to make a leap this season after going 2-7 a year ago. The Demons are excited to showcase their hard work.
“It’s been really exciting getting back out their with the guys,” Washington quarterback Logan McDole said. “Not everyone plays all the different sports. It’s just a great group of guys. We have fun and we’re excited to hit.”
The Demons have a great opportunity to make some noise as a number of their skill players return.
“It’s really exciting, we’re going to be really sharp,” 2023 leading receiver Mason Morgan said. “Most of us are coming back.”
“We’ve built a lot of chemistry,” running back Kael Williams said. “A lot of us are friends outside the sports so it’s just fun to all be back.”
Washington will get its first taste of action on Friday when it takes on Muscatine. The Demons first game of the season will be against Oskaloosa on Friday, Aug. 30.
Washington volleyball is in a similar boat. The Demons return nearly every starter from their 2023-24 squad that finished 17-18. A lot of underclassmen are now upperclassmen.
“I think all the hard work everyone put in during the offseason is really paying off,” Leighton Messinger said. “Everyone is just so encouraging, and we all have each other's back.”
The chemistry feels different for the returning core.
“I'm super excited,” Ella Greiner said. “The chemistry this year honestly feels even better than last year.”
“I think the season is going to be amazing,” Lauren Hinrichsen said. “We have a lot of team chemistry, and I think this season is going to be very enjoyable.”
Meanwhile, Washington cross-country is looking to keep up a long line of success on both sides.
Both the Demon boys and girls will be looking to take the Southeast Conference crown once again.
On the boys’ side, the Demons will try to get back to state as a team for the second straight season.
“I'm excited,” Washington’s Andrew Rees said. “We definitely lost a lot of leaders, but we'll still be pretty good this year. We'll make a run for conference, and state.”
The Washington girls sent one runner to state last year, while just missing out as a team by two qualifying points. They hope to get over the hump this time around.
“What happened last year only pushes us,” Lauren Horak said. “We've got the same good group of girls, a lot of seniors, and we really want it.”
“I play softball in the spring and summer, so I was kind of balancing those two sports, and once softball is over, we're full cross-country,” Kendall Hinrichsen said. “I know a lot of girls on the team put in tons of models this season, so we're all where we want to be.”
