ADEL — It has been an up-and-down day for teams at the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union state golf meet Tuesday at River Valley Golf Course, but the Washington Demons team are in a position they are very familiar with.
Although the Demons have won a lot of meets this year, the state tournament is a completely different setup. It is a two-day tournament of 18 holes each day.
After one day and a round of play, Washington is in first place with a team total of 340. That is 52 over par. Second place is 69 over par, and Gilbert has that score of 357. West Delaware is in third at 383, Dubuque Wahlert is fourth at 386 and Clear Lake fifth at 389.
The Demons have five of their six girls in the top 27 of the 72 total golfers at the 3A meet.
Individually, Washington’s Kiki Guo is in second place with a 75, a stroke behind Gilbert’s Eden Lohrbach’s 4-over 76. Demon teammate Anna Nacos is fourth with a score of 80. Makenna Conrad is 12th at 90.
Mt. Pleasant’s Elli Liechty carded a 91 to be tied for 13th with three others.
Washington’s Kaylin Long posted a 93, tied for 20th with two others. Josie Tanner has the sole score of 96, which is 27th. Alecia Goff is 55th with a 110.
Clear Lake has two golfers in the top 10 after the first day with Meghan DeLong (sixth at 83) and Rebecca DeLong (10th at 87).
Gilbert’s Macy Underwood is 13th with a 91, Eden Bruner is 18th with a 92 and Hallie Nelson 30th with 98.
West Delaware’s four scores are 93, 94, 97, 99 while Wahlert’s four are 89, 92, 100, 108.
Bruner has sunk one birdie, Nacos two and Conrad one. Bruner had 12 pars, Nacos nine, Conrad six, Tanner four and Long three.
Liechty had five pars and a birdie.
