WASHINGTON — Washington and Fort Madison boys basketball re-upped their rivalry on Friday night in yet another contested Southeast Conference bout.
Last time, it was the Demons who walked out of Fort Madison with a 10 point win, 73-63, but this time around it was the Bloodhounds who spoiled Washington’s home stand, 58-51.
The Demons and Bloodhounds were nearly dead even in the conference clash, with just three points separating the two at most in single quarter scoring.
In the opening quarter, it was apparent that it was going to be a back and forth battle as both teams put together runs through eight minutes.
It was Fort Madison who came out of the gate firing on all cylinders as the Bloodhounds opened the contest with an 11-4 advantage through the first four minutes.
Washington wasted no time answering back. Beginning at the 3:44 mark, the Demons rattled off an 6-2 run to cut it to three, 13-10. The Demons kept it up until the end of the quarter, as Kael Williams notched back-to-back buckets, followed by a Nic Stone two with just two seconds on the clock to close the quarter on another 6-2 run.
By the end of the first, the two teams were tied at 16-16.
To begin the second, Drew Conrad drilled a three to give Washington a quick three point lead, 19-16, but Fort Madison followed with an 8-0 run to make it a 24-19 game.
The Demons hit just three more shots the rest of the first half, but all were from deep and the final from Seth Shepherd put Washington up 28-27. However, that would be the Demons final lead of the game as Fort Madison closed with four straight points to make it 31-28 at the break.
Through the third, both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket early. Washington outscored Fort Madison 4-2 through the first five minutes of the quarter, which cut the Bloodhound lead to just one, 33-32.
Washington scored just four more points the rest of the frame off two pairs of free throws, while Fort Madison closed the quarter with nine points of its own to take a 42-36 lead into the fourth.
The Demons found a solution to get right back into it with the three ball. Washington knotted the game at 47s after outscoring Fort Madison 11-5 to the midway point in the final period. The Demons hit three triples through that span, two from Logan McDole and the tying three from Drew Conrad.
However, the Bloodhounds closed the game well as they dropped in 11 of their own to the final whistle, while the Demons finished with just four.
Logan McDole led Washington with 11 points, five assists and four rebounds in the loss. Drew Conrad and Roman Roth both scored 10. Kael Williams finished with eight, Nic Stone five, Rajan Roth four and Seth Shepherd three.
The Demons traveled to Clear Creek-Amana on Saturday. Washington fell in that one 87-70.
McDole paced Washington in that one with 24 points. Conrad added 14 and Nic Stone scored nine. Noah Greiner finished with seven and Kael Williams five. Roman Roth, Andrew Shepherd and Seth Shepherd all had three. Rajan Roth scored two.
The Demons now sit at 6-11 overall and are 4-5 in SEC play.
