Washington’s stalwart defense and two rushing touchdowns by Kael Williams helped power the Demons to their first win of the season. As it heads into Week 4, Washington aims to replicate that form.
The Demons (1-2) will face Class 4A District 4 side Oskaloosa on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Case Field. The game will be streamed on the Southeast Iowa Live YouTube and Facebook pages.
Friday’s game will be Senior Night for the Washington football team. The Demons have nine seniors listed on their roster: Kael Williams, Carson Brown, Aidan Schmitz, Grant Whisler, Caden Greiner, Nerick Raymundo, Gatlin Nash, Rudy Wolfe and Carson Ryan.
Washington leads the series against Oskaloosa 5-4 in games played since 2008. The Demons ran out 21-14 winners at home when the two sides met last season.
Like it did against Burlington last week, Washington’s defense had a strong showing the last time it faced Oskaloosa. Brady Krantz had five tackles, including three for loss and 1.5 sacks - the Demons totaled 4.5 for the game. Greiner racked up six tackles. On special teams, Williams returned a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown.
Oskaloosa (0-3) has plenty of familiarity with Washington’s last opponent. It lost to the Grayhounds 45-31 in Week 2, and fell 34-20 to Mount Pleasant last Friday.
Quarterback Tyler Edgar leads the Oskaloosa offense. The junior has completed 33 of 62 passes for 467 yards, six touchdowns with five interceptions. He is also the team’s leading rusher with 134 yards and a score. Edgar’s best outing of the season thus far came against Burlington when he threw for 222 yards and four touchdowns.
Kayne Boender and Heavon Knox have been Edgar’s best targets this season. Boender has 14 catches for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Knox has 15 receptions for 201 yards and four scores. His 13.4 yards per catch is the fourth best mark in Class 4A among players at least 15 receptions.
Brock Beerbower leads the Oskaloosa defense with 17.5 tackles, including 5.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks. Senior Parker Jordan is also in double figures for tackles with 11.
Friday’s matchup will be Washington’s final game before it begins Class 3A District 4 play. The Demons will face Mount Pleasant on Sept. 26 away from home for their first district game.
