Washington looks to bounce back against Mount Vernon
Demons set to face No. 4 Mustangs in week eight

WASHINGTON — Washington football will be looking for a bit of redemption this week when they host No. 4 (Class 3A) Mount Vernon.
The Demons (5-2) suffered just their second loss of the season last Friday night to Davenport Assumption 34-6.
Prior to that, the Demons picked up wins over Mt. Pleasant 39-28 and Keokuk 35-0. The Demons only other loss came against then No. 10 Grinnell 31-0.
Mount Vernon (6-1) is on a three-game winning streak. The Mustangs defeated Fort Madison 56-7, Assumption 46-14 and Mt. Pleasant 59-0 in their last three games.
The Mustangs lone loss came against Solon, who was ranked No. 1 at the time, 7-6.
Washington and Mount Vernon are pretty similar.
The Demons have thrown just under 1,000 yards, coming in with 924 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Mount Vernon just edges Washington with 1,310 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Mustangs have thrown 32 more passes than the Demons.
On the ground, Washington has tallied 914 rushing yards with 11 scores.
Mount Vernon enters with 942 yards and 19 total touchdowns.
Receiving wise, Washington has 10 touchdowns to Mount Vernon’s 14.
The Demons and Mustangs each have 13 takeaways.
Individually, Logan McDole has thrown for 811 yards and 10 touchdowns. McDole adds another 291 yards with his legs and four more touchdowns.
Kael Williams is Washington lead running back, entering with 470 yards and six touchdowns.
On the receiving end, Mason Morgan has accumulated 434 yards and three touchdowns. Jayred Espinosa has scored three times with 219 yards, while Williams has 162 yards and three scores as well.
On the defensive side of the ball, Jude Carter has 52 tackles. Summit Keith follows with 36.
Mount Vernon is led by Kellen Haverback undercenter. He’s passed for 1,234 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Cooper Hird has ran the ball for 401 yards and nine touchdowns.
Just three Mount Vernon receivers have over 100 yards. Jase Jaspers leads the way with 639 yards and five touchdowns. Watson Krob follows with 313 yards and seven scores, while Michael Ryan has 101 yards with one score.
Jaxon Anderson has 34 tackles for the Mustangs, while Nova Lane has 29.5. Lane also posts five sacks with a whopping 15.5 tackles for a loss.
Mount Vernon took last year’s meeting 65-6. On Friday, the two are set to square off at 7:15 p.m. at Washington’s Case Field.
