OSKALOOSA — Washington, Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield will all be represented well at the girls state golf tournament next week.
As the scores came in Wednesday after the Class 3A Region 3 tournament at Oskaloosa, there was never any doubt that the six Demons wouldn’t be crowed regional champions.
Washington solidified their season dominance with another ticket back to state, finishing with a low of 361 for the top spot. Washington bested second-place Lisbon by 26 stokes.
Demon’s Kaylin Long and Makenna Conrad have been at the top of the leader boards all year long and they had themselves yet another spectacular showing when it mattered most.
Long was the regional medalist finishing with a tournament low of 81. Conrad followed her teammate close behind in second with an 82.
“I’m really excited that the team made it this year,” Long said. “I’m really glad that all out hard work has finally paid off. It’s good to see all of us growing.”
The duo were the only golfers on the day to card sub 90 scores in the competition.
“These girls have definitely pushed me to keep working and nothing has came easy this year. Everything you’ve got to work for,” Long said.
Alecia Goff added a 96 for the Demons. Mallary Johnson shot 102. Maci Williams ended with 109 and Haley Mitchell a 121.
Lone area senior, Mt. Pleasant’s Sami Wibben did what she needed to do once again, earning herself a ride to state with a final score of 90, good enough for fourth overall.
“I’m kinda of emotional,” Wibben said. “This is the best I’v played ever and this course is hard. I had kinda had a hard time with the front nine, but the back nine was way easier because I switched some clubs around. It’s sad being my last high school meet. I’m glad I even got to be here.”
Kylie Walderbach rounded out the Panthers with a 108 on the day.
For the Trojans, it wasn’t the outcome they wanted as a team. They missed the cut by just seven strokes, tallying a 394 for fourth behind Keokuk (388) and Lisbon (387).
One bright spot for Fairfield on the day, came in the form of Myah Twohill.
With six spots up for grabs, Twohill earned her ticket to the state tournament with her lowest 18 hole of the season, posting a 92 for fifth overall.
Twohill, who was emotionally ecstatic to see the final scores, said that confidence was the key to her success.
“It’s all my mental health,” Twohill said. “My confidence and everything just got so much better. It was kind of just a flip of the switch. That confidence changed and I was like, maybe I can do it. I had a great time out there.”
Viola Welsh shot a 98 on the day. Macy Rayburn had 101. Kate Pettit golfed 103. Sara Kretz and Maggie Rayburn posted 106 each.
All of the qualifiers will participate in the state tournament on May 26-27 at River Valley Golf Course in Adel.
